Since 1948, the National Art Museum of Romania has been lodged by the Neo-classical building of the former Royal Palace, which was designed by the Romanian architect Nicolae Nenciulescu between 1927 and 1937. The central building and the two lateral wings of the Museum house galleries dedicated to Romanian art, European paintings and decorative art from the 14th to the 20th century, as well as collections of Oriental art.
The European art gallery has one of the most important collections of paintings in Europe. On display there are works by such masters as da Messina, Titian, Tintoretto, Velasquez, El Greco, Van Eyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Corot, Manet, and Sisley. The National Gallery contains the work of RomaniaÆs greatest modern and contemporary painters and sculptors. The Museum also has a section of medieval art (dating from the 14th to the 17th century), a gallery of graphic art, and one dedicated to the work of contemporary artists.
